Great book with the science and benefits of fasting!
UPDATE: At 8 weeks, I have lost 10 pounds! I mixed in a few longer fasting periods (24 and 36 hours) as recommended in this book. Still feel great!I have holded off writing a review until I not only read the book, but applied what I learned. Bottom line: if you are considering fasting, this is a must read to understanding the science behind it.I regularly work out and eat relatively healthy and have tried all types of diets, but nothing seemed to take off the weight. I began low carb/keto dieting and saw small results, but not enough. Then I came across a few blogs that talked about the benefits of intermittent fasting. Not only did people lose weight, but fasting helped those with diabetes get off meds. As a natural skeptic, I had to know this was not just another fad. You will learn quickly that this book is considered a “bible” for fasting. Dr. Fung is one of the leading experts on fasting and the science behind it. But I am sure you already know this if you are considering purchasing this book.First, the book is an easy read and while it is scientifically based, the jargon is minimal and explained in ways a non-medical layperson would understand. There are charts, testimonials, and analogies that help (the fridge/freezer analogy is awesome!). The book also addresses the myths of fasting with explanations as to why they are false – this will help when you will inevitably come across them when you tell people you are fasting. “You are starving yourself!” Dr. Fung goes over in detail what is actually happening in your body, and you are not starving, you are just transferring the fuel source (from glycogen, aka sugar, to fat!).In the back of the book, the author addresses common concerns (hunger, headaches, dizziness, etc.). There is a resource section with fluid options, fasting protocols, and recipes! My results: While my goal for fasting is fat/weight loss, I was surprised at how great I felt after fasting for 6 weeks. My goal was small (15-20 pounds in 6 months). I was already low-carb, so while I made some small adjustments in my diet, I did not go full-on keto. In 5 weeks, I lost 5 pounds and 1% body fat! This included 2 full on cheat days (it’s summer!). Others report much more aggressive results, but they may have made other changes or been more strict with the diet side. In addition, I also have more energy and feel less sluggish, sugar cravings have decreased, and in general, I have more self-discipline not only with eating, but other areas of my life. Win-Win-Win!If you are considering fasting, this book is a MUST. Results speak for themselves. The book goes beyond anecdotal evidence from bloggers or pill-pushing product affiliates. There is no quick fix, no pill, no magical drink, just simple rules to follow, consistency, education, and discipline. Overall, it is a mindset, but this book provides the science behind it.

Excellent Comprehensive Fasting Information n
Have faith! DON’T BE AFRAID TO FAST. This is a good modern book. First, I have been fasting for over 50 years. I have many fasting books, probably more than 35. The first being Rational Fasting, by Professor Arnold Ehret, first published in the 1920s, I believe. . I love Arnold because he was a modern pioneer, experimenting on himself and reporting the results. He was bold, daring and fanatical. So this book was almost 50 years old when I bought my copy.Herbert Shelton, a Naturopath, wrote several books, I read his fasting book in the late 60s. Principled and logical, he may have been the one that discussed the benefits of enemas.Anyway, I have completed 21 day and 42 day fasts , and various other fasts prior to reading Dr. Jason Fung’s book. Jason is a nephrologist and MD. So, if that is important to you, there you are. The spiritual benefits of fasting aren’t covered best I can recall. Which is good. Intermittent fasting will not let you enter the sacred realm of fasting. Nor will a two or three day water fast. You will have to earn those benefits. At minimum, be in ketosis for a few days or have a few extended fasts prior. I must say it is absolutely incredible. As if God has removed all physical and mental impediments to your spiritual thirst and handed you the keys to the golden ark of the covenant. Only now, you finally realize that it was never hidden and there is no lock. There never was. The only path to the state is the fast. You must do the same as Jesus had to do. You must deny yourself. Once you start, the guidance will appear. When you quit trusting the wrong people, the ones who say” everyone knows you have to eat” these misinformed useless eaters. Need to be as far away from you as possible. Throughout thousands of years of human history, Daily meals have NEVER been guaranteed. Except for recently when food stamps have been apparently trained people to believe false food dogmas. Now officially, I have not seen a healthy looking person using food stamps. Free food makes fasting hard to do. If one is surrounded by food, most will fail.Jason’s book will give you inspiration and instructions on what to do and what not to do. If you are diabetic, buy this book.

Great book for anyone who is interested in the practice of fasting, and nutrition in general.

Fasting can help even if you are not desperately ill. It gives energy and resets the system. Dr. Fung explains things really well and he has years of data to back up what he teaches. He has a few other very helpful books as well. He is not one of those guys that push things onto you.

DONT BOTHER BUYING THIS BOOK. THE INFO IS VERY OUTDATED AND NOT REVELEANT ANYMORE.
A reader –
Fantastic book – I got it on Kindle almost finished it the same day. Totally makes sense as an approach, and on page after page there is simple common sense backed by rigorous science. (It can be a bit repetitive in some of the points it makes, though). I’ve been “intermittently fasting” for 3 months now, and have lost 14 kilos in that time, with no bad effects (apart from some weakness at the beginning, which is entirely normal as the body adjusts). I plan to go on to lose 20 kg, and this is totally doable, and sustainable afterwards. A realistic and viable way to lose weight, keep it off and improve health, which can ve life-changing.
